Po Lin Monastery and Tian Tan Buddha

Po Lin Monastery
Po Lin Monastery is a Buddhist monastery, located on Ngong Ping Plateau, on Lantau Island, Hong Kong.
The monastery was founded in 1906 by three monks visiting from Jiangsu and was initially known as "The Big Hut". It was renamed to its present name in 1924. The main temple houses 3 bronze statues of the Buddha representing his past, present and future lives as well as many Buddhist scriptures.
Tian Tan Buddha, a giant Buddha statue completed in 1993, is an extension of the monastery.
The Ngong Ping 360, consisting of the Ngong Ping Village and a gondola lift running between Tung Chung and Ngong Ping, was built near to the Po Lin Monastery.

Tian Tan Buddha

The statue is named Tian Tan Buddha because its base is a model of the Altar of Heaven or Earthly Mount of Tian Tan, the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. It is one of the five large Buddha statues in China. The Buddha statue sits peacefully on a lotus throne on top of a three-platform altar. It is surrounded by eight smaller bronze statues representing gods or immortals.
The Buddha is 34 meters high, weighs 250 tonnes, and was the world's tallest outdoor bronze seated Buddha prior to 2007. It can even be seen as far away as Macau on a clear day. Visitors have to climb 268 steps in order to reach the Buddha, though the site also features a small winding road to the Buddha for vehicles to accommodate the physically challenged.
The Tian Tan Buddha appears serene and dignified. His right hand is raised, representing the removal of affliction. His left hand rests on his lap in a gesture of giving (dhana). The Buddha faces north which is unique among the great Buddha statues. (All others face South.)
In addition there are 3 floors at the bottom of Buddha: The Hall of Universe, The Hall of Benevolent Merit and The Hall of Remembrance. One of the most renowned features inside is a relic of Sakyamuni, consisting of some of his alleged cremated remains. There is a huge carved bell inscribed with images of Buddhas in the show room. It was designed to ring every seven minutes, 108 times a day, symbolizing the release of 108 kinds of human vexations.

Yuen Long Park and a pagoda

The Yuen Long Park, which has a total area of 7.5 hectares. It was open to the public in early 1991. The park is located on a natural woodland at Shui Ngau Ling adjacent to Shui Pin Tsuen, southwest of the Yuen Long town centre, and in the vicinity of the Yuen Long Stadium and the Yuen Long Swimming Pool.

Built on a hill, the park has retained, as much as possible, the existing landform and trees to present a beautiful picture. There are more than 800 trees scattered around the park. At the top of the hill is a pagoda with its lower level serving as an aviary and the upper levels as a lookout point for visitors to enjoy a panoramic view of the Yuen Long town and the new town of Tin Shui Wai. There is also an exquisite ravine garden with a small footbridge and a stream as well as an artificial lake and a cascade, where visitors can enjoy themselves and have a good time. Other facilities in the park include a turfed gateball court, soccer pitches, children's playground, a fitness trail and a fountain plaza etc. All in all, it is a good place for visitors to have fun.
